Exhibition Identity

Exhibition Identity
Year:
2023
We Come One was a 2023 exhibition by photographer and sound artist Dominic Markes. The exhibition featured photographs taken by Markes at a number of folkloric events he attended the previous year.

Attention to Imperfections
Dominic approached me to develop an identity that reflected the aesthetic of a bygone English era, referencing the printed pages of the book Happy England, published in 1903. Using letter forms from the Baskerville font, I deliberately misaligned the letters and added a bleed to mimic rudimentary printing techniques of the early 1900s.

What makes this look old?
Books in the early 1900s would have been produced on a printing press
(invented by Johannes Gutenberg). Letters were punched into lead by a punch cutter and arranged by hand onto plates that were coated in ink and pressed
onto paper.

Postcard Designs
Inspired by Dominic’s photography, I illustrated the fool and mushroom characters which became icons for the exhibition.
These were featured on the postcard designs along with a symbol inspired by the bells of the fool’s costume. The postcard collections showcased the photography displayed at the exhibition and were available to be purchased by those that attended.
